kernel/disk scheduler

Hi,

Thanks for the update to 1.6.

For Linux deployments I have set the kernel disk scheduler to noop. My thought is noop would just queue everything and send it to the array with no assumptions. VMware has a KB for this in regards to 2.6 kernels and I have set this on SLES for VMware as well running a 3.* kernel. Is there a recommendation either way on this for the analyzer? Thanks!

IOAnalyzer 1.6 Static IP

For those of you like me that want to use a static IP on your worker VMs, cant find how to set that up in the documentation and are not all that familiar with SuSE here is how I did it.

  1. Log into the ioanalyzer appliance via the console as root / vmware
  2. Open a terminal (one opens automatically or you can go to Computer and open GNOME Terminal)
  3. run yast
  4. In yast use your arrow keys to navigate to "Network Devices / Network Settings"
  5. Network settings will load and you can use Alt+i to edit the network adapter (in this configuration tool you will use Alt+<the yellow letter> to access that field, tabbing also works between fields)
  6. Alt+t to set Static IP
  7. Alt+I and enter the static IP
  8. Alt+s (or tab) and enter the subnet mask
  9. (optional) Alt+o (or tab) to enter the hostname
  10. Alt+n to go to finish this screen
  11. Alt+s to configure the hostname (again?), domain and DNS
  12. Alt+t to enter the host name
  13. Alt+d (or tab) to enter domain name
  14. Alt+1 to enter first DNS server (and 2, 3 for others)
  15. Alt+o to save changes
  16. Alt+q to quit yast
  17. then try reboot into the terminal to restart the appliance
  18. Repeat on each appliance

Hope this helps

VMware I/O Analyzer vs. IOMETER base

$

We have run vscsiStats to measure our current production workload and wanted to simulate that same work on a different IO configuration.  We have noticed that it is not possible to distinguish between "drives/LUNs" per VM and per host.  It seems that you can only replay at the "host level".

Therefore, we are reverting back to running several IOMETER sessions simultaneously across the VMs on multiple hosts in order to simulate the IO activity that we captured from our production environment. We don't want to just "replay" vscsiStats "as is" because our configuraiton on the "back-end SAN" is different than what we have  in production.  We want to test out RAID 10 vs. RAID 5 and different SAN pools of "mixed drive types- e.g, NL-SAS, SATA, SAS, SSD".  We are executing on EMC VNX storage arrays. Any suggestions are welcome.

Compare physical server with a virtual one?

Any chance we could have the ability to add a non vm dynamo for comparison? It seems like everything is mostly in place to do this, we'd just need a few scripts added to select, control, parse, and display the results via the web interface.

Bug: Cancel a Test that has low Test Duration

Hi,

I think this is a bug in IO Analyzer V1.6:

When I configure a test with low test duration (<120sec) then I get the question "Recommended duration is at least 120 seconds. Would you like to submit anyway?"

So when I click "cancel" the test is run anyway.

I use Firefox with Windows 7.

No guest stats collected

Hi all,

i deployed the io-analyzer 1.6.0 as a controller without any workers in our vpshere 5.5u1-environment, but i am unable to collect any guest-stats. Iometer does not popup. The analyzers second disk has not been edited and all settings are default. Running iometer from the analyzers desktop manually is working. I can ssh into the analyzer. The logs in /tmp/run-iometer.log and /var/www/ioa.log are empty.

/tmp/ioa-daemon.log states:

sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `('

sh: -c: line 0: `perl /root/ioAnalyzerScripts/copy_to_server.pl (Controller) /tmp/configInfo-local.txt /ioa/configInfo-local.txt'

sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `('

sh: -c: line 0: `perl /root/ioAnalyzerScripts/copy_to_server.pl (Controller) /ioa/run.conf /ioa/iometer-run.conf'

sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `('

sh: -c: line 0: `perl /root/ioAnalyzerScripts/copy_from_server.pl (Controller) /tmp/iometer.csv /tmp/iometer-VMware.csv'

head: cannot open `/tmp/iometer-VMware.csv' for reading: No such file or directory

grep: /tmp/iometer-VMware.csv: No such file or directory

rm: cannot remove `/ioa/tracereplay.conf': No such file or directory

Any hints?

With regards,

Marc

Dear I/O Analyzer Community,

We've just released a minor update release for I/O Analyzer, v1.6.1.

This minor update includes:

   * Changed guest I/O scheduler to NOOP and disable I/O coalescing at I/O scheduler level.

   * Downgraded VM version to 7 to be compatible with ESX/ESXi 4.0.

   * Back-end improvements to workload generator synchronization to support 240+ workers.

   * Bug fixes.

This version also includes a configuration generation script for trace replay tests. We will publish a separate document to describe how it works and how to use it.

Thanks those who have reported bugs and kindly provided us log files for debugging.

Please let us know if you run into issues with the new release.

Thanks for everyone's support,

Configuring trace replay tests with a large number of workers using traceReplayConfigGen.py (I/O Analyzer 1.6.1)

$

Dear Community,

In I/O Analyzer 1.6.1, we have included a script, traceReplayConfigGen.py, which generates a trace replay configuration file for a large number of worker VMs. This document describes the usage of traceReplayConfigGen.py.

  1. On your I/O Analyzer controller VM, go to the script folder:
    'cd /root/ioAnalyzerScripts'.
  2. The traceReplayConfigGen.py script takes several arguments, which you may see the explanation by running './traceReplayConfigGen –h'
  3. Assuming you have the following setup:
    - 4 ESX hosts: esx1, esx2, esx3, esx4.
    - 20 worker VMs on each host.
    - All worker VMs have a name prefix: "vmware-io-analyzer-1.6.1-". For example, the first worker VM is "vmware-io-analyzer-1.6.1-001".
    - All worker VMs will be running the same trace: DVDSTORE.
  4. To generate a trace replay config file for the above setup, run the following:
    './traceReplayConfigGen.py --testname 4host-80worker-DVDSTORE --vmcount 20 --trace DVDSTORE --vmprefix vmware-io-analyzer \
    --hosts
    esx1,esx2,esx3,esx4'
  5. NOTE that the "--hosts" argument should have NO SPACE in between host names or IPs.
  6. Also NOTE that this script will restart tomcat, so before running, make sure there is NO pending or running tests. Otherwise, web UI will lose track of all the ongoing or scheduled tests.
  7. The script will ask for ESX root passwords and try to generate the config for you. If you have the same password for all ESX hosts, you may supply the root password with "--password" argument to bypass the password prompt. NOTE that you might have to add a back-slash '\' for each special character if you supply your ESX root password over "--password" argument,
  8. After the config is generated, it will restart tomcat server and restore your previous no-vtop setting.
  9. Please then refersh your web UI and load the generated config from the web UI to verify whether it contains the VMs you need.

Please let us know if you run into issues when using traceReplayConfigGen.py.

NOTE that the script is completely experimental. We are planning to improve our web UI to support adding worker VMs with regular expression. Since web UI change might take time, this script is meant to be a temporary workaround.

Thanks for everyone's support,

Beware I/O Analyser on DHCP Subnets in a Windows shop

I/O analyser is built on SUSE linux with an internal hostname of `localhost` - not the name you see in the vSphere client.

When it self-registered `localhost` in the Windows DNS the second time it was started this afternoon it swiftly became a focus of attention for Group Operations.

Unsportingly, they deleted the record!

I had to 'fess up - at IT director level.

Doubt I'll be invited to their Christmas party.

Kindly note to the I/O Analyser `flingers`: pls give it a hostname.  `vmioa` would suffice.

IO Analyzer 1.6.1 IOmeter doesn't run

Hi,

I've downloaded and deployed IOAnalyzer version 1.6.1, and i'm having issue getting IO meter to run.

I've followed the installation instructions and done a bit of searching, and still cant get it to work.

I have added a DHCP scope and once the VM has booted and registered, i then give the VM a reservation and allowed for a host name to be given. Ive updated my DNS records and can resolve all IO Analyzer VM's with all reporting Round trip latency well below 1.5 seconds.

I can SSH into each host, and other workers using host names. (From each IO Analyzer VM via terminal)

I've even removed all other workers and just have one controller acting as a worker, and i still cant get the Web UI to launch IOMeter if i watch the console.

I can however, from a a terminal : /usr/bin/dynamo, then launch IOmeter and start a test manually.

Im lost as to what could be the issue, can anyone help ?

Hi,

I just downloaded version 1.6.1 and I was surprised that it was 2,8GB large. Is this huge size really necessary for an ova file?

Dear I/O Analyzer Community,

We've just released an update release for I/O Analyzer, v1.6.2.

This update mainly includes patched base OS packages to address security vulnerabilities including Shellshock. Although I/O Analyzer shouldn't be affected by Shellshock, it is still highly recommended to update to this version as soon as possible.

This update release also added additional warning messages when invalid VM names are detected.

Thanks those who have reported bugs and kindly provided us log files for debugging.

Please let us know if you run into issues with the new release.

Hi, I have a rather quick question.

If all the tests are based on IOmeter simulations, is there a list of all tests and their configuration specs available somewhere?

Hi,

I am trying to login into the appliance with root / vmware but I am getting an authentication failure, I can login with vmware / vmware but this does not give me root privileges as I need them to provide static IP info.

anyone knows the updated root password?

Thanks,

Harold
